National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)


The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) was set up by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Govt. of India as an autonomous organization in 1989.
NIOS provides flexible educational opportunities to enable people to study further and increase their employability for a better future.
NIOS provides education for girls and women, rural youth, working men and women and differently abled persons i.e., persons with disabilities who could not continue their education with the formal system.
NIOS operate through a network of Regional centres, sub regional centres and accredited institutions (AIs) known as study centre.
The Spastics Society of Tamilnadu (SPASTN) is Special Institute Centre (AI) for NIOS. It provides excellent educational opportunities for students who cannot continue their education with the regular stream.


NIOS allows the following ‘Relaxation’ for differently abled persons


•    Allowing a scribe
•    Extra time
•    Computers for writing exam
•    Adapted table, chair, bed etc
•    Use of calculator

SPASTN has a barrier free environment and suitable infrastructure which is complementary and user friendly for students with challenges.

SPASTN enrolls students who have Learning Disability, Autism, ADHD, Cerebral Palsy with average intelligence and mild Mental Retardation
The courses offered for NIOS are Secondary, Senior Secondary and Vocational Courses. On completion of NIOS, the students can pursue higher education in leading colleges and universities.
